Social media vs traditional media: which should a small business use?

Social media is content you publish, or pay to promote, on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, where people can reply and share. Traditional media is TV, radio, print and outdoor advertising, where you buy space and the message goes one way. Social is cheaper to start and easier to measure; traditional still reaches people who rarely scroll.

Where do people get their news now?

Digital has overtaken traditional channels, but TV hasn't gone away. In Pew Research Center's 2025 survey of US adults, 86% said they at least sometimes get news from a smartphone, computer or tablet, 64% from television and 53% from social media.

Asked which they prefer, about a third (34%) still chose television, ahead of news websites or apps (21%) and social media (14%). Facebook (38%) and YouTube (35%) are the social sites where the most US adults regularly get news.

TV itself is changing. Nielsen measured streaming at 49.0% of all US TV viewing in July 2026, with broadcast at 19.5% and cable at 18.7%. YouTube alone reached a record 14.2% of TV viewing.

So the line between the two is blurring. A YouTube video watched on a living-room TV is social media on a traditional screen, and most newspapers, radio stations and TV channels now publish on social platforms too.

What social media does better

  • Low cost to start: posting is free, and ads can run on a small daily budget with an end date.
  • Precise targeting: you can reach people in your area, of a certain age or with an interest in what you sell.
  • Conversation: customers can ask questions, book and recommend you in the same place they saw you.
  • Speed: a post about today's special or a last-minute opening can go out in minutes.
  • Measurement: platform analytics, tagged links and discount codes show what worked.
  • Discovery: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube all recommend posts to people who don't follow you yet.

What traditional media still does better

  • Reaching people who use social media rarely, or not at all.
  • Saturating a local area: a radio slot, a local paper or a billboard on a busy road is hard to scroll past.
  • Credibility for some audiences: appearing in a respected local title can carry weight.
  • No algorithm: if you pay for the space, the ad runs.
  • Moments when people aren't on their phones, such as driving or reading a printed paper.

How do you measure each?

Social media comes with measurement built in; traditional media needs a little set-up. Either way, aim to count enquiries and sales, not just how many people might have seen you.

  • Social posts: reach, saves, shares, comments, profile visits and link clicks, from each platform's own analytics.
  • Social ads: cost per click, cost per enquiry and cost per sale in the ad tool's reporting.
  • Print and outdoor: a unique web address or QR code tagged with UTM parameters, and a discount code used only on that ad.
  • Radio and TV: a dedicated phone number or offer code, and a check on website visits and calls in the hours after the slot runs.
  • All channels: ask every new customer how they heard about you.

How should a small business choose?

Start from your customers and your budget:

  • Limited budget: start with social media. It's free to post and you can test small paid campaigns before spending more.
  • Customers mostly older or offline: test local radio, print or leaflets alongside a Facebook Page. Pew found 57% of US adults aged 65 and over use Facebook, against 19% for Instagram.
  • Local business with a busy high street or road: outdoor and print can build familiarity that social posts then convert.
  • Selling online or nationally: social media and search usually give more reach per pound or dollar, and much better tracking.
  • Whatever you choose, judge it by enquiries and sales, not by reach or impressions alone.

How to make social and traditional media work together

They work best when each points to the other:

  1. Use the same core message, offer and visuals in both, so people recognise you twice.
  2. Put a short web address or QR code on print and outdoor ads, and tag it with UTM parameters so your analytics can count the visits.
  3. Give each channel its own discount code, so you can tell which one sent the sale.
  4. Post about your print, radio or TV appearances on social media to get more from what you paid for.
  5. Ask new customers how they heard about you, and keep a simple tally for a month.

Common questions

What is the main difference between social media and traditional media?

Social media is two-way: people can reply, share and message you, and you can measure results closely. Traditional media (TV, radio, print, outdoor) broadcasts one way and is harder to measure.

Is traditional media dead?

No. In Pew's 2025 survey, 64% of US adults still got news from TV at least sometimes, and 34% preferred it. But much TV viewing is now streaming, including YouTube.

Is social media cheaper than traditional advertising?

Usually cheaper to start: posting is free and ads can run on a small daily budget. Traditional media tends to cost a set fee per slot or issue, paid upfront.

How do I track traditional media results?

Use a unique web address or QR code tagged with UTM parameters, a discount code per channel, and ask new customers where they heard about you.

Where do most people get their news in 2026?

Mostly from digital devices: in Pew's 2025 survey, 86% of US adults got news from a phone, computer or tablet at least sometimes, against 64% from TV and 53% from social media.

Should a small business use both?

Often, yes, if budget allows. Social media is the base for most small businesses; traditional media can add local reach, especially with older or offline customers.
