What are the roles in Business Manager?

Business Manager is how a Pinterest business account shares access without sharing a password. Before you use it, you need a business account, and so does everyone you add. There are four roles:

  • Don't add an agency as an Employee. Pinterest says this limits their ability to share or access ad accounts
RoleWhat it means
Account OwnerSole control of the business account's login and settings, plus full control of Business Manager and organic content
ManagerFull control of roles and permissions. Apart from the owner, only Managers can add or remove people and grant ad account access
EmployeeWorks for your business. Sees only the ad accounts they're given, not other employees, partners or ad accounts
PartnerAn outside business, such as an agency, with its own business account

Which permissions should you give?

Permissions are set per asset. For someone who only makes Pins, the profile permission is enough; ad permissions only matter if they'll touch ads or billing.

  • Publisher is the only profile level and can't be customised, so anyone you make a Publisher can post without your sign-off
PermissionWhat it allows
Publisher (profile)Create, edit and organise Pins and boards without approval, edit the cover photo, manage public and secret boards, schedule Pins, handle comments and view Pin stats
Admin (ad account)The broadest ad access, including billing, business settings and audiences
AnalystReporting, custom reports and conversion file uploads
AudienceCreate and edit audiences
CampaignsCreate and edit campaigns, ad groups and ads
Finance (edit) / Finance (read)Edit or view billing and invoices
CatalogsCreate and edit data sources and product groups

How do you add an employee?

On a computer:

  1. Log in to your Pinterest business account and click the menu icon at the top left.
  2. Under Manage business, select Business Manager.
  3. Click Employees, then Add employee.
  4. Choose the role, Employee or Manager, and enter their business email. You can add several addresses at once.

How do you add an agency or other partner?

You'll need the partner's Business ID, which appears in the address of their Business Manager page and below their business name in the left panel.

  1. Open the menu, then Business Manager.
  2. Click Partners, then Add partner.
  3. Enter the partner's Business ID and choose Invite a partner to access your assets.
  4. Click Show assets, switch on ad account permissions and tick Publisher on the profile tab.
  5. Click Next, check the summary and click Send invite.
  • An agency can also request access from its own Business Manager, asking for up to 10 ad accounts in one request
  • You'll get an email titled You have a new partner request!, or an Accept invite button on your Business Manager dashboard

How do you change or remove access, and what can go wrong?

Review who has access whenever someone leaves or an agency contract ends.

  1. To change a role, select the employee, click Edit details, then Edit employee role.
  2. To remove one permission, click the minus icon next to the asset. For a partner's profile access, use Revoke access.
  3. To remove an employee, click Edit details, then Remove employee.
  4. To end a partnership, click the minus icon next to the partner's name.
  • The invite hasn't worked: the person must accept it, and they need their own Pinterest business account
  • They can't see an ad account: Employees only see the ad accounts you assign. Use Assign ad accounts on the Employees tab
  • You can't add anyone: only the Account Owner and Managers can add or remove people
  • Locked out of assets after a security change: if you've required two-factor authentication, people can't reach your assets until they turn it on

Common questions

Does someone need a Pinterest business account to join mine?

Yes. Pinterest says employees and partners need their own Pinterest business account before you can give them access.

Can I share my Pinterest account without giving my password?

Yes. Business Manager lets you add people with the Publisher permission, so they can post and manage boards using their own login.

Can a Publisher post without my approval?

Yes. Pinterest says Publishers can create, edit and organise Pins and boards without the business's approval.

Should I add my agency as an employee?

No. Add them as a Partner using their Business ID. Pinterest says adding a partner as an Employee limits their access to ad accounts.

Where do I find my Pinterest Business ID?

It's in the address of your Business Manager page, and in the left panel under your account name.
