Block, restrict or limit: which should you use?
Our advice for a business: restrict an unhappy customer you still want to answer, block spam and abuse, and use Limits when a post attracts a pile-on from strangers.
| What changes | Block | Restrict | Limit interactions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who | One person (and their other accounts if you choose) | One person | Groups, such as recent followers |
| Their comments | Removed from your posts | Only visible to them unless you approve | Hidden unless you approve |
| Their messages | Not delivered to you | Move to Message Requests | New chats go to Hidden requests |
| How long | Until you unblock | Until you unrestrict | Up to four weeks at a time, can be extended |

What happens when you block someone?
- Their likes and comments are removed from your posts, and unblocking doesn't bring them back
- They can't mention or tag you
- Your old chat stays in your inbox, but you can't message each other. Messages they send aren't delivered, even if you unblock them later
- They can still see your likes and comments on posts from public accounts or accounts they follow
- They can't join a room you create while logged in

How do you restrict someone?
The quickest way is from one of their comments:
- Go to your post and tap Comments.
- Tap and hold the comment.
- Tap Restrict account.
- From their profile: tap Options in the top right, then Restrict
- From a chat: tap their name, tap Options, then Restrict and confirm
- From settings: tap Menu, then Restricted below How others can interact with you, tap Next and search for the account
- When they comment, tap See comment to read it, then Approve to show it to others or Delete to remove it. You won't get notifications for their comments
- They can't see when you're online or whether you've read their messages, and you can read their messages without them knowing

How do you limit interactions for a while?
Limits hides new comments and chats from groups of accounts, without them knowing. Limited accounts can't reply to your stories, tag or mention you, or remix your content.
- Tap Profile or your profile picture, then Menu in the top right.
- Below How others can interact with you, tap Limit interactions.
- Tap What will be limited, then choose Some interactions or Most interactions.
- Tap Who will be limited and choose Everyone but your Close Friends, Recent followers and/or Accounts that don't follow you.
- Tap When we'll remind you to turn this off, choose a time, then tap Turn on.

Why is a blocked or restricted person still showing up?
- You already follow another of their accounts. Blocking their other accounts doesn't cover ones you follow, so block those one by one
- You're in a group chat together. If you choose to stay, you'll both see each other's messages in that group
- Your Facebook account isn't in Accounts Center. They can still message or call you there unless you block them on Facebook too
- You turned Limits off. Comments made while it was on stay hidden, but new comments show unless you restrict or block the account
- You're on Instagram Lite. There you can only restrict someone from their profile

Common questions
Does Instagram tell someone when you block them?
No. Instagram says people aren't notified when you block them.
What's the difference between blocking and restricting on Instagram?
Blocking cuts contact: their comments and likes are removed and their messages aren't delivered. Restricting is quieter: their new comments are only visible to them unless you approve them, and their messages go to Message Requests.
How do I see who I've blocked on Instagram?
Tap Menu on your profile, then Blocked below Who can see your content.
How long can you limit interactions on Instagram?
Up to four weeks at a time, and you can extend it for as long as you like.
If I unblock someone, do their old comments come back?
No. Unblocking doesn't restore their previous likes and comments.
