How to add a location to a post on X (Twitter)

X needs location switched on in two places. First on the phone:

1. iPhone: open Settings, tap Privacy, then Location Services, turn it on, find X and choose While using the app.
2. Android: open Settings, tap Apps, find X, tap Permissions and turn on Location.

• Then in X: tap your profile icon, Settings and privacy, Privacy and safety
• Under Safety, tap Precise location in the Location section
• Turn it on (a slider on iPhone, a checkbox on Android)

The label shows under the post's text. X says you can add a general place such as a neighbourhood or city, and in select locations on the iOS and Android apps you can name a specific business, landmark or point of interest. One X page says these places come from Foursquare and Yelp; X's location FAQ names only Foursquare.

1. Tap the compose icon.
2. Tap the location icon to open the list of places.
3. Select the location you want.
4. Finish the post and send it.

For a business this is useful at your shop, stand or event. It's a bad idea at home or anywhere you don't want pinned to the map.

• The label you choose, shown under the post
• If you attach a photo or video from X's in-app camera and turn on precise location, the post also carries your latitude and longitude, which can be found through the X API
• That precise location can be more specific than the label you chose
• After you post with a location once, your next posts from that device show your current general location automatically

For one post, tap the location icon in the compose box and tap X in the top left. X won't add location again until you choose to. To turn it off for good and wipe past locations, on x.com:

1. Select the More icon in the left menu.
2. Go to Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety.
3. Under Data sharing and off-X activity, open Location information.
4. Open Add location information to your Posts and untick the box.
5. To remove location from all past posts, select the red text below the box and confirm with Delete.

• No location icon: location services are off for X on your phone, or Precise location is off in X's settings
• Your business isn't in the list: named businesses and landmarks are only available in select locations. X points place errors to Foursquare's Help Center
• Location keeps appearing: X carries it over to your next post. Remove it in the composer or switch off the setting
• Old locations are still visible elsewhere: X says deleting location data doesn't remove it from third-party copies or search results, or from locations shared in Direct Messages
