How do Facebook recommendations work?

When Recommendations are on, anyone logged in to Facebook can recommend your Page, see its rating and read recommendations shared publicly. Meta says recommendations help customers learn about your business and may make your Page easier to find in Facebook search. Customers leave one like this:

  1. Go to the business's Page and click Reviews.
  2. Click Yes to recommend the Page or No to not recommend it.
  3. Choose the audience for the review.
  4. Write the recommendation and click Post.

How do you turn recommendations on or off?

Meta's steps are below. Think before turning them off: Meta says this removes the rating and reviews from your Page entirely. If your Page had reviews before, Recommendations were switched on automatically.

  1. Log in to Facebook and click your profile photo in the top right.
  2. Click See all profiles and select your Page.
  3. Click your Page's profile photo in the top right.
  4. Click Settings and privacy, then Settings.
  5. Click Page and tagging.
  6. Toggle Allow others to view and leave reviews on your Page? on or off.

How is your Page's rating calculated?

Meta says the rating is based on the reviews and recommendations people share about your Page, with a few rules worth knowing:

  • A Page may not show a rating until it has at least 5 reviews.
  • Only recommendations shared publicly count; a review shared with friends only doesn't.
  • Visitors may see different review counts, depending on whether they're in a reviewer's chosen audience. When you're switched into the Page, you see the public count.
  • Reviews that break Meta's spam policies are removed, which can change your rating.
  • Meta doesn't check that reviewers bought the product or used the service.

How do you report a fake or abusive review?

You can report a recommendation that doesn't follow the Community Standards, and Meta may remove it after review. Recommendations that are only a star rating can't be reported. Meta also says people who help manage a Page shouldn't recommend it, so don't ask staff to fill the tab. To report:

  1. Click Reviews under Details below your Page's cover photo.
  2. Click See all next to Recent reviews.
  3. Click Options in the top right of the post you want to report.
  4. Select Report post and follow the on-screen instructions.

How should you respond to reviews?

Meta's help centre doesn't give separate steps for replying to a Page recommendation, but it does treat business replies as public content: replies to business reviews can themselves be reported if they break the Community Standards. Write every reply as if a future customer will read it, because one will:

  • Thank people by name for good reviews, and mention what they liked.
  • For a complaint, apologise once, avoid arguing and offer to sort it out by message or phone.
  • Never share a customer's order details or personal information in public.
  • Fix the cause where the complaint is fair, and say so when you have.

What about ratings in Meta Business Suite?

Separately from Page recommendations, Meta may ask people who appear to have bought from you through your ads to rate the purchase. Those ratings live in Meta Business Suite under All tools, then Ratings and reviews, where you click Respond, write a reply and click Publish response. Meta reviews replies against the Community Standards before they appear. Meta notes the tool isn't available to every business yet.

Where Zolyp fits with reviews

Zolyp is our product, so weigh this section with that in mind. Replies to reviews need a person who knows the customer, and Zolyp has no social inbox, so they stay with you. What Zolyp can do is turn your best feedback into posts, such as a weekly customer story, so good reviews reach your followers' feeds too.

Zolyp plans the week across your content themes, writes the captions and designs the visuals against your Brand Brain (your tone, colours and rules, saved once), then schedules and publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business, X, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and Threads. You review and approve the week, and Autopilot lets you hand off publishing theme by theme once you trust the output. Plans that create the posts start at $29 a month, with a 3-day free trial and no card required.

Common questions

Can I delete a bad review on my Facebook Page?

Not directly. You can report a recommendation that breaks the Community Standards, and Meta may remove it. Turning Recommendations off removes all reviews and your rating.

Why doesn't my Facebook Page show a star rating?

Meta says a Page may not have a rating until it has at least 5 reviews, and only publicly shared recommendations count towards it.

Does Facebook check that reviewers are real customers?

No. Meta says it doesn't verify that people bought the product or used the service they recommend. It does remove reviews that break its spam policies.

Can staff recommend our own Page?

Meta says you shouldn't leave a recommendation for a business if you help manage its Page.

Where do I see how many recommendations my Page has?

Switch into your Page and click Reviews at the top. Meta shows the number of times people have recommended your Page over time.
